This presentation addresses fundamental health, safety, and welfare issues involved in sustainable design and explores the following learning objectives:

• The role of chemistry in the modern world,
• The impact hard surfacing materials impose on the environment from which they are sourced,
• The hazards associated with specific materials used for interior surfacing solutions, and
• The critical issues which must be con-sidered when labeling materials as sustainable.

Equipped with this information, designers and architects will be better positioned to guide their clients to make more informed decisions about the hazards and sustainable value of the various hard surfacing choices available.
