The Compton

The Compton, a lifestyle hotel on Bentonville’s downtown Square, connects guests to the region’s beauty while offering modern amenities. The design blends indoor and outdoor experiences through biophilic elements and regionally-sourced materials. A sculptural limestone bluff anchors the atrium, surrounded by wood, native plants and natural textures. The hotel includes a steakhouse, café, cocktail bar and event space. The design creates an elevated experience for hotel guests and the community.

Project Statement

The Compton is a 142-room, 121,000-square-foot lifestyle hotel located on Bentonville, Arkansas’s historic downtown Square, designed to reflect the character of the region while delivering a functional and memorable guest experience. Originally initiated in 2019, the project spanned more than seven years, requiring sustained coordination across all phases. The project brief called for a destination hotel that would connect visitors to the natural beauty of Northwest Arkansas while activating the downtown square with spaces that serve both guests and the local community. Originally engaged as executive architect, the team transitioned into the lead architect role following shifts in the design team—refining the schematic design and carrying the project through design development and delivery.

A primary design challenge was translating the region’s expansive natural environment into a dense downtown site without losing authenticity. This was addressed through a biophilic design approach that integrates natural materials, light and landscape throughout the building. At the heart of the hotel, a two-story atrium features a sculptural limestone “bluff” inspired by the nearby Buffalo River. A 30-by-30-foot skylight draws daylight deep into the space, while native plantings, wood stairs and limestone flooring create a multisensory environment that blurs the boundary between inside and out. Located within an evolving civic corridor, the project required close coordination with the City of Bentonville as adjacent streets and parks were redesigned to enhance pedestrian connectivity, ensuring the hotel aligned with the broader urban vision.

Guest rooms extend this concept through natural materials, operable windows and design elements inspired by the movement and color of the Buffalo River, creating an immersive environment. Execution required coordination across more than ten subconsultants, all led by BRR, alongside a highly engaged and detail-oriented client, requiring a high level of communication and precision to maintain design intent.

From an operational perspective, the hotel supports a wide range of uses while maintaining efficiency and flexibility. The program includes Field Notes, an all-day café, Sestina, a Tuscan steakhouse, The Eddy, an elevated cocktail bar, two ballrooms, pre-function space, retail, event space and bike storage, all thoughtfully integrated into a cohesive layout that serves both hotel guests and the broader community. Field Notes transitions seamlessly throughout the day, activating the street edge and inviting repeat local use. Sestina offers a warm, open atmosphere centered around a limestone carving station, shaped from regionally sourced stone and hand-chiseled by skilled artisans. The dining area opens immediately beyond, highlighting custom features like the veiny emerald onyx bar top sourced directly from Italy. Above, The Eddy provides an intimate, elevated setting, pairing panoramic views of downtown Bentonville with a curated beverage program, plush seating and extensive bar that connects Bentonville’s evolving nightlife to the hotel.

Creativity and connection are expressed through the project’s integration of experiential design with practical functionality. The Compton delivers on its brief as a place that is both distinctly local and broadly inviting—an immersive environment that elevates the guest experience while contributing to the vitality of downtown Bentonville.
