Project Statement
Searcy High School Lion Arena
Searcy, Arkansas
The new Searcy High School Lion Arena is a 97,000-square-foot facility that elevates both athletics and community engagement. It replaces a decades-old competition gym that had served the district for nearly 60 years but could no longer meet the needs of students, athletes, spectators, or the community. The new arena addresses those limitations with modern amenities, significantly increased capacity, and flexibility to host a range of events.
Designed to meet Arkansas Activities Association State Tournament guidelines, the arena seats 2,800 spectators with permanent seating and offers floor seating for an additional 600. This allows the school to host large-scale tournaments, graduation ceremonies, and district-wide assemblies.
Built Into the Landscape
The arena is carefully integrated into the hillside of the school’s campus. This sloped site allowed for ground-level access at both the concourse and court levels, improving circulation and simplifying wayfinding. An additional entrance at the parking level improves accessibility for staff, students, and community members.
As an additional benefit, the building's placement into the hill provides a natural protective layer. Portions of the structure serve as a storm shelter with reinforced construction and direct egress paths. This design not only improves safety but also enhances the arena’s year-round usability.
Efficient, Secure, and Practical
Security and functionality are key priorities. The arena was designed with multiple levels of access control and circulation to support school-day use, after-hours events, and emergency conditions. Public and private zones are clearly defined, allowing staff to manage events of all sizes without compromising student safety.
A Community Showpiece
This is more than a gymnasium. The Lion Arena functions as a community hub, with programs and amenities that extend far beyond sports. It includes a main competition court, seven locker rooms including visitor and official changing areas, a training room, laundry facilities, a well-equipped weight room, cheer and dance studios, and a VIP hospitality room that supports special events and class reunions. Additional spaces include an audiovisual control room and a golf simulator for off-season training.
The design accommodates multiple types of events. Whether for athletics, fine arts, academic recognition, or community celebrations, the arena is a versatile and dependable venue that serves the entire Searcy community.
Celebrating School Identity
Searcy High School’s history and spirit are deeply embedded in the design. Sculptural logos, wall graphics, historic photo montages, and displays of past athletic and academic achievements all reinforce a strong sense of school pride. These features make the arena not just a venue, but a visual representation of Searcy’s legacy and future.
A Lasting Investment
The Lion Arena is a bold investment in student experience, educational infrastructure, and civic pride. It enhances everyday life for students and faculty while opening new opportunities for regional collaboration and engagement. With thoughtful design, practical amenities, and a clear community focus, the facility is positioned to serve Searcy for decades to come.
