The Cookson Residence is a simple home with three bedrooms, 2 ½ baths, and an office loft overlooking a bright living area with a gas, stucco fireplace. Views are focused toward the back of the home with large windows allowing the spaces within to receive ample natural light. Openings within the home allow for transparency throughout the spaces, providing visual control while making the spaces appear larger.
Project Statement
Overlooking ‘Flint Ridge’, the Cookson home is a small residence with three bedrooms and 2 ½ baths. The client requested a home that would be appropriate for a growing family, while not feeling too large. The office and primary bedroom on the upper level, overlook the living area. With the addition of strategic openings between the living, dining, and kitchen, the home is designed to allow for visual control throughout while maintaining separation between the different spaces. This consideration also makes the rooms within appear to be more spacious. A tall fireplace accentuates the double height volume of the living area as it pierces through a skylight that highlights the stucco texture. The efficient plan results in little circulation, maximizing the inhabitable spaces within. Built in wardrobes and additional cabinetry complement the architecture of the home. Each piece is custom designed to suit the needs of the client and the space. A simple material pallet of white oak, stucco, and steel are sure not to overwhelm the small home, but are meticulously detailed to add interest. Modern elements are mixed with inviting spaces, materials, and light conducive to comfortable living. At the exterior, large overhangs provide shade to the glass as well as protected spaces during rain or shine. Materials continue from the exterior to the interior, blurring the line between the two. The parti is informed by the spaces within, creating a dynamic form.
