Searcy Physical Therapy Clinic
Can a building promote healing? Searcy Physical Therapy Clinic tries to answer that question by embracing the landscape.
Located in Searcy, Arkansas, the client sought a vitalizing facility that would shift their patients from an existing windowless strip mall to a space that aids in their recovery. As the architects, we were fueled by the owner’s concept of embracing the natural landscape to promote the health and well-being of the patients inside. Approaching the public entrance, a large canopy and stone seat wall extend generously to draw patients to the clinic. An illuminated cove running perpendicular to the entrance begins the sequence of opening up the interior environment, reorienting those who enter, to either the waiting area or a future community room. From the waiting room, an inconspicuous translucent doorway leads to the spacious treatment gym which dramatically opens up to generous expanses of transparency and volume - shredding all expectations of a static clinical interior to that of a warm, light filled interior. Semi-private treatment rooms are open to the light filled wood and steel structure afforded by the clerestory above. Patients and those who attend to their needs are invited to experience warm light filled interiors with views to the exterior environment during the intimate process of receiving and providing treatment. By offering views of nature, access to daylight and ample space to move freely the building encourages recovery and wellbeing.
